The global anti-pollution mask market size is expected to reach USD 4.8 billion by
2025, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc., exhibiting a 9.3%
CAGR over the forecast period. Factors such as rising need for remedial
measures to address increased pollution levels and high rate of awareness
regarding health and well-being are expected to remain prominent trends in the
global market. Growing urbanization and industrialization, particularly in
developing regions such as India and China, plays a predominant role in
increasing pollution levels across the globe. In addition, increasing number of
vehicles adds to degradation of the air quality. These factors play a major
role in driving demand for anti-pollution masks.
Anti-pollution masks are available in
different standard ratings such as N95, N99, N100, P95, and P100, which is
recommended by The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH), an association of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). P rated masks are resistant to oil-based particles and are used in
occupations that cause workers to be exposed to oil particles. N rated masks,
on the other hand, are not resistant to oil-based pollutants. N95 masks filter
up to 95% of the particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), while N99 masks filter up to
99% of PM2.5 owing to higher rate of filtration.
Asia Pacific is the largest as well as
fastest growing market owing to rapid industrialization and a booming
automobile sector. Rapidly growing population in developing economies such as
India and China has resulted in large-scale urbanization, which increases
pollutant levels in the atmosphere. This, in turn, spurs product demand.
According to a report by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, 5.5
million people die owing to household and outdoor air pollution every year. And
more than half that number of deaths occur in India and China.
Prominent players in the market are
focusing on product innovation. For instance, in November 2016, Xiaomi launched
a battery powered anti-pollution mask to filter out PM2.5 particles while
breathing. The mask is made with hand-woven polyester material and equipped
with battery powered nano filter, which is chargeable through a USB port.
Similarly, in November 2018, O2TODAY launched an urban face mask called
O2SafeAir, through global travel retail Indiegogo. The mask is reported to be
highly breathable, machine washable, and engages with interchangeable filters
from protection against pollution and microorganisms.
